If you look at history, almost all major revolutions started because of hunger. Famine, rising prices, devaluation, war or the aftermath of war, were several of the reasons for the hunger. A population that can no longer feed itself, takes to the streets, and demands their rulers immediately change priorities to start taking care of the plight of their own citizens.
This, looking back to history, can very quickly descent into violent mobs who are no longer interested in negotiating, but simply want satisfaction: revenge or punishment of those who are starving their own families.
If the Western elites aren’t careful, they will have a season of revolutions at hand. The seeds are sown, and we see the first protests arise. All still reasonable, non-violent. Pray it remains that way.
But this is only beginning.
Let’s put it this way: whatever their plans or goals are, they have overreached and miscalculated.
Several things need to be put in perspective. First, we had Covid, and the very draconian measures taken to ‘stop’ or ‘prevent’ the virus from ravaging their populations. Very strict lock-downs, closing of borders, travel restrictions, etc. had an impact on economies all over the world. Some sectors experienced a windfall (look at Zoom, for example. The need for teleconferencing in mid lock-downs gave that company a 10-fold increase in stock value!), while many others got decimated (think about the whole hospitality sector: restaurants, bars, hotels…).
Still struggling with the aftermath of Covid, the war in Ukraine broke out. Some people vehemently deny this, but the EU and NATO are at least partially to blame for this, for their tone-deaf insistence to box in Russia and expand NATO all the way to the territory of Ukraine. Russia has been very vocal and very clear in warning that such was a red line it would not allow to be crossed, from the idea that it wanted a proper buffer.
This makes a lot of sense if you look at it historically: every invader got stuck in the long distances between their own countries and Moscow. Ask Napoleon and Hitler how they fared! Some claim that such doctrine is obsolete, with new rocketry that has much longer range than any buffer possibly could provide. While that is certainly true, you cannot win a war without boots on the ground, and this is where that buffer comes back into play.
Also, and this is very important: if you place nuclear capable missiles in Ukraine, under NATO flag, a whole lot of top Russian cities and military installations suddenly have almost zero warning time in case of a strike.
The whole Cuba Crisis was exactly about this: buffer. Don’t let Russian missiles be installed in the backyard of the US! The US was willing to go to war over this. But, you might object, this was last century! True, but even this past year, Australia protested strongly against prospective Chinese bases in the Solomon Islands. As Al-Jazeera reported:
“The China-Solomons deal has not been publicly released but a leaked draft alarmed countries in the region, particularly sections that would allow Chinese naval deployments to the Solomons, located less than 2,000km (1,200 miles) from Australia.
The prime minister had warned that establishing a Chinese military base in the Solomons would be crossing a “red line”.”
Tell me again how the establishment of buffer distance is obsolete?
Anyways, NATO did ignore the Russian requests, later demands, with the known outcome: Russia invaded Ukraine, to the point that Zelensky now conceded, and said that Ukraine will NOT join NATO (as reported by, among many other news outlets, the British ‘The Independent’), blew hot and cold on this topic, and is still entertaining a possible avenue after the rushed membership acceptance for Sweden and Finland.
In this war, all kinds of embargoes and sanctions were placed on Russia, including on food, oil, and so on, including a whole attempt to tank the Rubble. This monetary attack has failed miserably, as the Rubble, after an initial drop in value, regained strength compared to both the Dollar and the Euro.
Result: inflation not just in the US, but also in the EU. Rising prices.
With the sanctions on gas, whole economic sectors are in severe decline, as they cannot get the energy they need for their production, or it became way too expensive, making them no longer competitive on the world markets. Pro-Russian Telegram channel ASB posted:
“Gas deliveries from Russia will allow Germany to avoid an energy crisis this winter, Bundestag deputy Y Schmidt told RIA Novosti. He also called on the German government "to try to curtail the sanctions policy, which first of all hits Germany itself, in the future building long-term trusting relations with Russia without threats and foreign policy ultimatums."”
The Daily Mail, in the same line, wrote an alarming headline: “Back to the dark ages? Now millions of Britons could be told to switch off the lights and turn down the thermostat to avoid blackouts this winter under emergency plans”
And it explains:
“Households might have to turn down their thermostats and switch off lights to avoid blockouts under emergency plans.
Government measures to tackle the energy crisis this winter would include appeals to the public to cut down on energy use in the event of an electricity or gas supply shortage.
[…]
The news comes as EU countries were told to cut their usage by 15 per cent from next month over concerns they will not be able to store enough for winter after Russia reduced its supply of gas on the NordStream pipeline.”
Victor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, spoke in Romania on Jul 23, 2022, and excoriated the European position.
“The Western strategy was built on four premises: Ukraine could win with Anglo-Saxon instructors and NATO weapons, sanctions would weaken Russia and destabilize the Russian leadership, Europe could manage the economic consequences of sanctions and would suffer less than Russia, and the whole world would support the Western position. This strategy has failed.”
And also:
“There will almost inevitably be an economic downturn in European countries, which may also cause political storms.”
Earlier, he has come out strongly against the EU sanctions. Reuters reported that “Orban has said before that Hungary is unwilling to support EU embargoes or limitations on Russian gas imports as that would undermine its economy, which is about 85% reliant on Russian gas imports.”
Three South European countries have refused to accept the proposal by the European Commission to curb their use of natural gas by 15%, to lessen the shock of the loss of sanctioned import of Russian Gas: Greece, Spain and Portugal.
This coming energy shock will wreak havoc on the European citizens: loss of employment as companies can no longer operate, reductions in available energy, less heating gas in the middle of the coming winter (!!), and so on.
The irony is here that Trump during a UN speech in 2018 had warned Germany specifically about their dependence on Russian oil and gas.
Here is a clip of what Trump said, and the way the media here mockingly presented it to the American people:
Or as the WaPo gleefully pointed out:
But recently, they had to eat crow, and posted this headline:
Daily Wire’s Cabot Phillips reminded the WaPo and other news media about their previous mocking of Trump and rejection of his claims on German dependence on Russian gas, and wrote:
This is the reality Europe faces. A severe energy crisis, that will hurt their own citizens with skyrocketing prices when they barely were able to get out of the Covid-mess, and further hampered by inflation!
And as if that is not enough, there is a food crisis in Europe, also in good part because of the war in Ukraine. This time, not the fault of Russia, but of the EU itself, who seems to be steering towards a food crisis, in part by destroying their own farmers with insanely strict rules that have no basis in any environmental reality, such as in the Netherlands, and in part by placing embargoes on Russian grain, including grain coming from the Ukrainian regions that have been captured. The US was pressuring other nations NOT to accept ‘blood grain’
The Conservative Treehouse wrote on their substack that Ukraine and Russia had met and come to an agreement regarding the export of grain, which is vitally important to many countries all over the world for their food imports.
“However, from the perspective of the Western alliance, the agreement mooted one of their biggest justifications for the upcoming global food shortage. If Ukraine and Russia are exporting food, and yet food costs are still rising…. well, the food shortage impact from western energy disruption, the Build Back Better agenda, starts to become increasingly visible.”
For some weird reason, cruise missiles hit grain transport infrastructure in the port city of Odessa.
As Conservative Treehouse remarked: “The origin of the mysterious missile attack becomes clear when you overlay the question of ‘who has motive’?
It wasn’t Russia.”
We see a commitment by Europe to create a food shortage, for some reason. We see talk about ‘eating bugs’, talk against livestock and meat, the European ‘Green New Deal’ that involves strict limitations on the use of fertilizers, decreasing crop yields (!!), based on Davos policies and proposals (which is directly at the basis of the uprising in Sri Lanka, as well!). We see sanctions on Russian fertilizers, increasing prices for farmers all over the world, leading to decreases in crop yields, as well. We see attempts to blame the Russians for causing this shortage, diverting attention from their own schemes and policies.
Something is up with all that, but whatever the reasoning is by the EU/US/NATO, the reality is this: at a time when many people are still recovering from the Covid lock-downs, are facing inflation, and a severe energy crisis and shortage, the EU leadership is actively trying to create a food shortage, as well.
I won’t speculate on the reasons why, that is a whole different topic. (But to give one possibility: creating a crisis that would allow them to force through policies on green energy that would otherwise would not be accepted by their populations).
Here, I simply want to make the following observation, informed by a solid grasp of history: they are making an enormous gamble, and have seriously miscalculated. As Orban pointed out: the sanctions backfired. Russia is stronger than ever, is creating diplomatic and economic ties with countries all over the world, and Europe is crumbling, becoming more and more isolated.
Look at this map:
The orange countries are the ‘Global Coalition against Russia’. Here, they represent strictly the countries that have imposed sanctions against Russia, but it shows who is, and, more importantly, who IS NOT taking steps against Russia: Basically the whole non-western world!
Europe is done for. It has undercut her own economic power through the energy sanctions.
It has undercut her diplomatic credibility by the mishandling of the Ukraine crisis (think about the 2014 Minsk agreement, where Germany and France were guarantors, but failed to act when Ukraine violated the terms, and look at the failure to garner lasting global support!). It is undercutting the food supply to her own population through inflation, draconian climate regulations, and other policies and sanctions. It has too many irons in the fire, and it is all backfiring at the same time.
And now, European citizens are up for a very hard time.
They have to realize that their own leaders are NOT acting in the best interest of their own populations, but are pushing other agendas. And they are starting to rise up. The Dutch farmers started. Their protests are only growing, and carry support by more and more people in their country. German, Polish and Italian farmers are joining in. They know it is not about climate change or environmental regulations, but about a naked power grab by their leaders, against their own populations.
Wait till the winter comes. Wait till food becomes too scarce, or too expensive. Angry people will flood the streets, and topple governments.
My hope is that this will be without violence, and that the European people finally wake up and take charge of their own nations again. Stop the lunacy of social engineering projects, such as gender ideology and unbridled immigration to replace or dilute the native European populations (ask Poland and Hungary how they got strongarmed and sanctioned by the EU for not following those policies!)
Stop the Green New Deal lunacy, and go back to investing in the most modern, state of the art nuclear energy plants, for a true energy independence, as well as a proper focus and attention to their own farmers. The Dutch farmers are the best in the world. Learn from them, instead of punishing them, regulating them out of business, and stealing their farmland!
Stop the Covid Passport lunacy, and the unbridled social control, based on the Chinese social credit system, that comes with it.
Stop the progressive lunacy, eating away like a cancer at the European cultural achievements and identities!
The US would be well served by a strong and independent EU. Not like it is today. And the freedom of their people is at stake, as well: this should resonate with Americans, and we should stand shoulder to shoulder with the Dutch farmers, with the other common citizens, in their bid to counter their governments power grab and regain their own freedom. Then again, we are in a similar struggle to regain our freedom, against a swamp in both the Democrat and Republican parties, that committed a massive election steal that has been going on for too long, imposing policies on us that nobody wanted (but with our protests and disagreement hidden behind false election numbers, and false poll numbers, and false media coverage or non-coverage!).
If history is a guide, the coming year(s) will be very crucial for Europe, as food shortage, energy shortage, and soaring prices and inflation, will drive many of the common people on the brink. The longer that crisis lasts, the longer they take to stand up against their governments, the deeper the damage will be. The greater the danger for social upheaval, and actual violence. I pray it doesn’t come to that. But some important markers are starting to point towards a crisis of epic proportions, creating the exact same conditions for the common people that gave rise to so many of our revolutions.
I pray for peace, but, more importantly, for a change of mind and heart in Europe, that is expressed in a change of leadership and priorities.
The road they have taken so far, started on such great and lofty promises and ideals, is ending in utter failure. Those failures are now made in rapid succession, and are compounding. I predict serious social unrest all over Europe, by the end of this year, start of 2023. How will the European people respond? What road will they take?
We’ll have to wait and see.
Reading this article saddened me, not because it is untrue but because it is true. I spent two years in Germany decades ago and it was a wonderful experience. Great culture, great people and so much to see. To see what the elites are doing to that great country is unforgivable and I don't even live there. I cannot imagine that the people there have become so imprisoned that they will not rise up and overthrow the lunacy. As you said, I hope it can be done peacefully but if not, it still needs to be done.
